Ready to Open your New Account at Place Trade?


Opening an account is super easy at Place Trade!  All accounts are opened online - in just minutes!  You may click on the Login Menu (on the top right side of any page in the menu bar) and choose "Open an Account Online" or simply click on the open account link (here).* 

Once your account is funded and approved by our compliance department you may begin trading.  The approval process is usually pretty quick but occasionally we get back logged (due to all of our wonderful clients that have made the switch to Place Trade) or we may require additional information (such as proof of identity and account statements for transferring accounts or other items).  This is all pretty painless and we are happy to help you if you have any difficulties at all.  (Most likely you won't but we are here if you do!)

If you are transferring an account: After you put in your personal information you will reach the account “fund your account” section of the application.  From here you will choose which type of transfer you would like to do – feel free to call us if you have any questions or concerns (sometimes there are too many choices and it can be confusing). You may choose to transfer an entire account or only part of an account.**

Most common type of Account Transfer:  If you are transferring an existing traditional brokerage account (including individual, joint, IRA, Roth IRA, SEP etc.), you will need to click on the second choice box on the bottom half of the page which lists several items but specifically shows “ACAT.”   This is the correct choice, you will then see a drop down menu that requires you to choose full or partial.  Next to that there is a drop down menu which offers a list of the firm that you are transferring funds from.  If you do not see your firm’s name please check to see the name of your firm’s clearing firm (many firms use clearing firms these days) and click on that name.  Then you will need to fill in the rest of the information (not much) and submit the ACAT request.  Once you submit the ACAT request you will receive an email with a token/number/code in it.  You will need to enter this code in the space provided on your application and then enter the ACAT request.  Once you receive  a message saying that it has been received you should be all set.  Please make sure to check your email in case the new accounts department has any questions or needs you to provide any additional information.

Please note that you Do NOT need $10,000 to open an account.  If you see a message that says this during the account application/funding your account process please let us know right away.  This is not the case.  Learn more about our new account equity minimums by following this link.

*FYI:  If you happen to need to finish your application later or if you were logged out or bumped off or for whatever reason - you were unable to complete your application you may simply click on the Finish an Application tab on the login menu and it will lead you back to where you left off.  So long as you have set up a user name and password you will be able to get back in.  If you have not received an account number or sign on name you may need to start over or just give us a call at 1-800-50-PLACE or 1-919-719-7200 and we may be able to retrieve your information for you.  (We don't mind!  We will be happy to walk you through the account set up as well if you need help.)

Occasionally, if and when you are logged off it is necessary to re-enter (only) the most recent information that was entered prior to the last save (usually the last page is the page before the specific page that you were viewing at the time that you were logged off.  This information is not meant to scare you - only to let you know that it is easy to get back in and finish if you happen to need to.


 **If you only transfer part of your account please be very careful to enter the correct symbol that your securities trades under.  For example, if you are trying to enter a specific security's ticker symbol and the security happens to use a symbol that is shared by other companies you will have difficulty getting your account transferred.  

To avoid this, please make sure to match the symbol and name of your security prior to accepting the transfer.  

Many times security symbols are used by several different companies but each on a different exchange.  If you do not specify that it is a US only stock (if that is the case) or check that you have the correct exchange you may end up with the wrong security in your transfer request.  In this case you will not receive that security in place of yours - you will simply need to resubmit your account transfer request because the original request will be rejected.  (This does not happen often but it could happen.)  If you have any questions or concerns please give us a call and we will be happy to assist you.

Please noteIn addition to securities that may be held in a traditional brokerage account, Place Trade offers securities and other investment products (such as mutual funds and annuities when appropriate) that may be held outside of your Place Trade brokerage account - specifically being held with the different companies that offer the product that you own.  

For example, if you own a mutual fund, the fund will be held at the mutual fund company and not in your Place Trade brokerage account.  

(By the way, we only use well known, highly reputable firms where your account can easily be monitored or liquidated so that you may easily verify your holdings and access them at anytime.  We do not ship your money off to hedge funds or investment managers that are not nationally recognized or able to be reviewed via Morningstar or other longstanding services - unless you insist and then we have to do what you say because you are the boss!)  

We choose to offer firms that we feel confident in their reputation, management and consistent returns.  While no firm is perfect and unfortunately there are still stories in the news about trusted former governors, chairmen and otherwise pillars of the community doing unscrupulous things, we believe that the firms that we use have solid reputations.  In addition we believe that our clients are better served avoiding taking unnecessary chances with their investments and we choose to avoid taking obviously unnecessary risks.
